How to build an FAQ or Q&A in Confluence Cloud without an app (and when you need one)
Last updated: 27 October 2026 · By Quicksloth
Most teams can build a good FAQ in Confluence Cloud with what is already there: a template, the Expand macro, labels and a report page. That works well when a few people write the answers and everyone else reads them. It gets harder when you want readers to ask their own questions, vote, and mark the answer that worked.
Short version: for an FAQ that your team curates, use one of the two native setups below: a single page with Expand sections, or one page per question pulled together by labels and a content properties report. Confluence search, and Rovo on the plans that include it, will find those pages. If you need questions from readers, votes or accepted answers, that is what Q&A apps from the Atlassian Marketplace add.
Two native setups: one page, or one page per question
| Aspect | Single FAQ page | One page per question |
|---|---|---|
| Good for | Up to a few dozen short answers on one topic | Many questions, several owners, answers with steps and screenshots |
| Built with | Headings and the Expand macro | A template, labels, the content properties macro and its report |
| Link to one answer | Harder: all answers share one page | Each answer has its own page and URL |
| Upkeep | One page to edit; can get long | New pages appear in the list on their own once labelled |
Setup 1: a single FAQ page with Expand
The Expand macro shows a collapsible section. Atlassian's help page Insert the expand macro (read on 27 October 2026) gives the steps:
- While editing, open the insert menu from the toolbar or type /, then pick Expand.
- Replace the default title, "Click here to expand…", with the question.
- Put the answer inside the expand.
Repeat for each question, and group them under headings (for example "Access", "Billing", "Tools") so the page is easy to scan. The same help page notes that when you export the page to PDF or HTML, the expands are opened, so the export shows every answer.
Tips: write the question exactly as people ask it, since that is what they will type into search; keep each answer short and link to a full page when it needs steps; add a line at the top saying who owns the page and how to suggest a new question.
Setup 2: one page per question, collected by labels
For a bigger FAQ, give each question its own page, label all of them, and build an index page that lists them automatically. Three native pieces do this.
Labels
From Use labels to organize content and attachments (read on 27 October 2026): open the Details panel from the floating action bar at the bottom right of the page and select + next to Labels. Labels are lower case and have no spaces (a space becomes a hyphen). Use one label for the whole FAQ, such as faq, plus one per topic, such as faq-billing. Every label also has its own Labeled content page, at an address like /wiki/label/faq.
A list of questions with Filter by label
The macro that used to be called "content by label" is now Filter by label (Atlassian's old help address for that macro now opens the Filter by label page). According to Insert the filter by label macro (read on 27 October 2026), you type /filterbylabel, choose the labels in Add label(s), and can narrow the list with Add filter(s): title, text, space, creator, child pages and others. The list is dynamic, so a new page with the label appears without editing the index.
A table of questions with content properties
The page properties macros have been renamed too: they are now the content properties macro and the content properties report macro (the report "was previously known as the page properties report macro"). From Insert the content properties macro and Insert the content properties report macro (both read on 27 October 2026):
- On each question page, insert the content properties macro and fill a two-column table inside it. The left column holds the keys, which become the report's column headings, for example Topic, Owner, Applies to, Last checked.
- Add the FAQ label to the page and publish it.
- On the index page, insert the content properties report macro and enter the same label. The first column is the page title, linked to the page.
Limits from the same pages: a report accepts one content properties ID; it shows 30 rows per page with pagination; it is sorted by last modified unless you choose a column; and it can optionally show comment and like counts, which is the closest native thing to "how popular is this answer". If the report is empty, the help page suggests checking that the label is on the pages, that the properties macros are set up, and that your filters are not too narrow.
Templates and a knowledge base space
A template makes every question page look the same and pre-fills the label. What Atlassian's help pages say, all read on 27 October 2026:
- Built-in templates. Confluence Cloud "comes with more than 70 templates" (Create templates, blueprints, and reports). You pick one from the template browser after selecting Create (Format a page, live doc, or blog post with a template). We did not find a template called "FAQ" from Atlassian; the FAQ templates that rank in search come from third parties.
- Knowledge base spaces. When you create a space and choose the purpose Knowledge base, Atlassian says it includes "templates for how-to guides and troubleshooting articles" and lets you edit pages privately before publishing (Create a space). A how-to or troubleshooting article is a good starting point for a longer answer.
- Your own FAQ template. Space admins go to Space settings, then Look and Feel, Templates, Create new template (Create a template). Templates can include variables, placeholder text and labels, so a "Question" template can carry the
faqlabel and a content properties table with empty values. Images and attachments cannot be added to templates. - An "Add a question" button. The Create from Template macro puts a button on the index page that opens a new page from your template in the space you choose. It is the native way to let others add questions, as long as they can create pages there.
How people find answers: search and Rovo
FAQ pages are normal Confluence pages, so Confluence search finds them. On plans with Rovo, search can also answer questions in plain language. From Use Rovo to search for answers (read on 27 October 2026):
- Rovo is "automatically activated for all apps on Standard, Premium, and Enterprise plans"; organization admins can manage access.
- Answers come from Confluence pages, live docs and blogs that the person asking has access to, and respect page restrictions.
- Atlassian warns that "The quality, accuracy, and reliability of information generated by AI may vary". Atlassian says you get the best results when the site is full of detailed, up-to-date content.
So the native setups have a real advantage: a well-titled FAQ page, kept up to date, feeds both the search bar and Rovo's answers.
What native Confluence does not do for Q&A
Pages and comments can carry questions: Atlassian's page on comments (read on 27 October 2026) says comments let you "ask questions", and others can reply and react. But none of the help pages above describe these Q&A features, and we have not found them in Confluence Cloud:
- Questions as their own thing. A reader's question is either a page they create or a comment on someone else's page. We found no built-in list of open questions across a space.
- Votes that rank answers. Reactions and likes exist, but they do not reorder replies so that the best one comes first.
- An accepted answer. We found nothing that marks one reply as the answer that solved the problem.
- An "unanswered" filter. There is no built-in "unanswered" list; the closest workaround is a label such as
openthat someone removes by hand once a question is answered. - Answers in comments are easy to miss. When the real answer sits in the fifth reply to a comment, a reader skimming the page may not see it.
For an FAQ that your team writes, none of this matters much. For a place where people ask the experts, it is most of the job.
When a Q&A app is worth it
Consider an app when at least one of these is true:
- People outside the FAQ's owners should be able to ask, and you want to see which questions are still open.
- Several people answer, and you want the best answer to rise by votes or be marked as accepted.
- The same questions keep coming back in chat, and you want them answered once, in Confluence, where they can be found later.
Before you choose one, check two things. First, where it stores questions: as normal pages, or as the app's own content. Content of an app's own type (what Atlassian calls "custom content") created by Forge apps does not appear in Confluence search results today, a known issue Atlassian tracks as CONFCLOUD-84122 ("Gathering Interest", last updated 18 October 2026, read on 27 October 2026), so apps that store questions that way rely on their own search. Second, whether it runs on Forge or still on Connect, whose support ends on 31 January 2027: see Atlassian Connect end of support.
Q&A apps for Confluence Cloud compared puts four apps side by side, with prices, reviews and what each one lacks. If you are moving from Data Center, what happens to your Q&A when you move to Cloud covers Questions for Confluence and EliteSoft's app. Weighing a knowledge base space (with or without Jira Service Management) against a Q&A? See Confluence knowledge base vs Q&A.
We are building one of these apps: Quicksloth Q&A for Confluence, on Forge for Confluence Cloud. It adds questions, answers, votes, accepted answers and a search that covers the text of answers; because of the issue above, its questions are found with the app's own search, not Confluence's search bar. It is coming soon to the Atlassian Marketplace; the overview will link to the listing as soon as it is live.
Questions and answers
- Is there an FAQ template in Confluence Cloud?
- We did not find one from Atlassian. Knowledge base spaces include how-to and troubleshooting templates, and a space admin can create an FAQ template in a few minutes under Space settings, Look and Feel, Templates.
- Where did the page properties report macro go?
- It is now called the content properties report macro, and the page properties macro is the content properties macro. They work the same way: a two-column table on each page, a label, and a report that collects them.
- What happened to the content by label macro?
- In Confluence Cloud the macro that lists pages with a label is Filter by label. Type
/filterbylabelin the editor. - Can Rovo replace an FAQ?
- Rovo answers from your existing pages, so it works best on top of a good FAQ, not instead of one. Atlassian says you get the best results when the site is full of detailed, up-to-date content.
- Can readers vote on FAQ answers without an app?
- They can like or react to a page or a comment, and the content properties report can show comment and like counts. There is no native way to rank answers by votes or mark one as accepted.
