Which of your Shopify apps still use script tags? How to check before March 1, 2027
Last updated: 16 October 2026 · By Quicksloth
On 1 March 2027 Shopify will stop running script tags on storefronts. Some apps still use them to put a widget, a pop-up or a size chart on your pages. You can find out which of your apps do in about ten minutes, without installing anything and without touching your theme's code: you only read your store's page source and open the theme editor.
Short version: open your store, view the page source, search for asyncLoad and write down the addresses in the var urls list. Each one is a script tag of an app. Then, in the theme editor, open App embeds and check whether that app has an embed you can turn on. If it has none, ask the developer what happens on 1 March 2027.
What changes, with dates
Shopify's developer changelog of 24 August 2026, Script tags are deprecated and will stop running on March 1, 2027 (read on 16 October 2026), gives two dates:
- 1 October 2026: apps can no longer create or change script tags. The changelog says: "Existing script tags will keep running." So nothing has to look different on your store yet.
- 1 March 2027: "On March 1, 2027, Shopify will stop injecting script tags into storefronts." Whatever an app shows on your storefront through a script tag stops showing on that day.
The replacement Shopify asks developers to use is an app embed: "Replace each script tag with an app embed block, which you ship in a theme app extension." Shopify's developer guide adds that "App embed blocks are inactive until an app user turns them on" and that an embed is "enabled per theme" (Storefront script tags, read on 16 October 2026). In other words: even when your app's developer has done the work, the new version may wait for you to switch it on.
The same guide says that an earlier plan included a banner warning store owners who install an app that uses script tags, and that Shopify has "decided not to show this banner for now". That is why it is worth checking yourself.
Step 1: find the script tags in your page source
On the storefronts we have checked, Shopify lists the script tags of all your apps in a small loader near the top of the page (Shopify does not document this loader, so it could change). You can read it like any visitor can.
- Open your store's home page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer. If your store has a password page, enter the password first.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose View page source (or press Ctrl+U on Windows; in Chrome on a Mac, Option+Command+U). The code of the page opens in a new tab.
- Press Ctrl+F (Command+F on a Mac) and search for
asyncLoad. - A few lines below the match there is a line that starts with
var urls = [. Each address between the square brackets, in quotes and separated by commas, is one script tag. Slashes are written as\/, so an address looks likehttps:\/\/cdn.example-app.com\/widget.js?shop=your-store.myshopify.com. - Copy the list into a note or a spreadsheet, one address per row. For each one, write down the part between
https:\/\/and the next\/: that is the domain, and it usually contains the name of the app or of its developer.
If the search finds nothing, your store has no script tags on that page and you can skip to Step 2 to be sure your apps' embeds are on. If the list is there but empty (var urls = [];), the same applies.
If you cannot tell which app a domain belongs to, compare it with the list of apps installed on your store in your Shopify admin; a search for the domain on the web usually finds the developer too.
Step 2: find the app embeds
App embeds are the new way. You can see them in two places.
In the theme editor
These steps are from Shopify's help page Extend your theme with apps (read on 16 October 2026):
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
- Next to your published theme, click Edit theme.
- In the sidebar on the left, click the App embeds icon.
- You see one row for each embed that your installed apps offer, each with a toggle. Write down which apps are listed and whether their toggle is on.
Embeds are set per theme: if you publish a different theme, check this list again on that theme.
In the page source
In the same page source tab as Step 1, search for cdn.shopify.com/extensions/. Files that a theme app extension adds to your page (app embeds and app blocks) load from addresses like cdn.shopify.com/extensions/<id>/<extension-name>-<version>/assets/.... The extension name usually tells you the app. An embed that is switched off in the theme editor normally does not appear here, so the theme editor is the complete list.
Step 3: put the two lists side by side
For each app that showed up in Step 1 or Step 2:
- Script tag only, and no embed in the theme editor: this app needs a change from its developer before 1 March 2027, or what it shows on your storefront will stop. Go to Step 4.
- Script tag, and an embed that is switched off: the developer may already have the new version ready. Read the app's help pages or ask before you switch it on, so you do not end up with the widget twice.
- Script tag and an embed that is on: the app is probably moving over. Ask the developer whether the script tag can go; Shopify's guide says leftover script tags will simply have no effect after 1 March 2027.
- Embed only: nothing to do for this date.
Then open a product page on a computer and on a phone and look at what each app shows there. A quick screenshot of each page today makes it easy to compare after 1 March 2027.
Having script tags is common and not a sign that an app is abandoned. When we read the public home pages of 32 live Shopify stores on 13 October 2026, 27 of them loaded at least one script tag, most often from large, actively maintained apps. For many of them the change will be a toggle in the theme editor.
Step 4: ask the developer
Use the support link on the app's Shopify App Store listing or in the app itself. A short message gets a clearer answer:
Hello, my store still loads your app through a script tag (address: [paste the address from Step 1]). Shopify will stop running script tags on storefronts on March 1, 2027. Will your app offer an app embed or app block before that date, and is there anything I need to do?
While you wait, keep the app installed and save a copy of anything you set up in it (texts, tables, images), if the app lets you export it. That copy is what you rebuild from if you have to change app.
If the app is a size chart app: our guide to adding a size chart in Shopify's free themes shows a way that needs no app and no script tag, and our page on ESC Size Charts and the 2027 Shopify dates has the steps to save your charts.
Questions and answers
- Do I need to remove script tags myself?
- No. Script tags are created and removed by the apps, not in your admin. Shopify's developer guide says that after 1 March 2027 "leftover script tag records will have no effect".
- Does this affect my checkout or my order status page?
- The 1 March 2027 date is about storefront pages. For the order status page, Shopify's developer guide says: "They already stopped working on the Order status page." It does not mention checkout.
- Does the check have to be done on every page?
- The home page is a good start, because the loader in Step 1 is part of the code Shopify adds to every storefront page. If an app only shows on product pages or in the cart, repeat Step 1 on a product page to be sure.
- An app I use for analytics or ads tracking has a script tag. Is that different?
- Shopify points scripts that only collect analytics or conversion data to a different replacement, web pixels, which the app creates and which, in Shopify's words, "don't need to be activated in the theme editor". Ask the developer the same question as in Step 4.
- Will a theme block that shows a page or a chart break?
- No. Blocks of your theme and app blocks from a theme app extension are not script tags.
Dates and quotes come from Shopify's developer changelog of 24 August 2026, Shopify's developer guide "Storefront script tags" and the Shopify Help Center, read on 16 October 2026. Shopify can rename menus: if something looks different in your admin, Shopify's help page has the current names. The method in Steps 1 and 2 is the one we use to check public storefronts.
